Comparison of horizontal wind observed by wind profiler radars with ERA5 reanalysis data in Anhui, China

The wind profiler radar (WPR) network in Anhui Province China completed the construction 2019 to improve warning capacity for meteorological disasters. To verify its proper performance, vertical profiles of horizontal winds were compared with ERA5 reanalysis data from January December 2021. results show that WPRs demonstrate good capability measuring atmospheric due their high collection rate (> 80%). Overall, availability decreases increasing altitude, exceeding 90% below 3 km during daytime without precipitation. In terms seasonal variability, annual mean effective detection height reaches a maximum value at 4–6 summer and minimum approximately 2 winter. Comparison analyses measurements by excellent agreement zonal (correlation coefficient > 0.89 standard deviation < 2.57 m/s) meridional 0.76 3.26 over most WPR stations Anhui, China. Additionally, biases between generally follow Gaussian distribution pattern, which are all close zero. particular, differences increase much lower bias present layer. addition, difference turbulence day night, statistical parameters comparison behave better than those night. These findings indicate is capable providing quality data, laying solid foundation improvement development boundary layer scheme future.
